The Foundation
BEGAWAN
Established in 2001, Begawan Foundation is a grassroots organisation committed to holistic community development in Melinggih Kelod, Payangan. The Foundation has modelled solutions to some of Bali’s most pressing issues and operates a nature conservation program for the critically endangered Bali Starling, a regenerative rice farming program in Bayad Village, and an after-school learning centre providing quality education to rural children.
Progressive Education
Begawan Guru
Begawan Guru Learning Centre is a free after-school program dedicated to local community students aged 6 to 14 years old. Students attend the learning centre in the afternoons six days a week, and receive a high-quality, progressive education at no charge to their parents. Educational programs are divided into four categories: Thematic, proficiency, practical entrepreneurial, and extracurricular. We currently welcome 65 children, and have 108 children on the waiting list.
Nature Conservation
Begawan Gita
Begawan Foundation became involved with nature conservation in 1999, when it launched a breeding and release program to save the critically endangered Bali Starling from extinction. The Foundation invested in state-of-the-art enclosures for the birds and expert care from the country’s best birdkeepers, as well as post-release monitoring and habitat preservation. To date, Begawan has bred and released more than 130 Bali Starlings into the wild.
Regenerative Farming
Begawan Giri
Begawan’s rice farming began with one farmer in 2022. Today, we work with nine farmers to cultivate chemical-free Mansur Heritage Rice on three hectares of land in Bayad Village. Begawan’s regenerative agriculture initiative has three goals: to help local farmers transition to regenerative agriculture practices, spread education about the importance of agriculture, and to work with local farmers to increase earnings and create stable incomes.
Our Commitment
EMPOWERING THROUGH EDUCATION
